WAGUE UNABLE TO PLAY FOR BARCELONA

Barcelona defender Moussa Wague has been unable to feature for the Catalans since his move in the summer from Eupen due to his difficulty to obtain a work permit.

He will remain ineligible to represent the Barcelona senior team in any official matches until January, according to RACI journalist Gerard Romero.

The 20-year-old defender currently plays for the Barcelona B team and had been touted by the media as a potential replacement for the injured Sergi Roberto but we now understand that the play is not eligible to play for the senior team.

Wague featured for the Senegalese national team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and some quarters of the media have claimed that he is too good to be playing in the third tier of the Spanish League. Fans will be expecting him to finally make his Barcelona first team bow in the Copa del Rey clash against Cultural Leonesa but it seems the player will have to wait a little longer for his much anticipated debut.

In the New Year, Wague will be available for selection by Ernesto Valverde to either watch from the bench or even get some first team minutes under his belt.

However, there may not be many opportunities like the Cultural Leonesa match as Barcelona are very likely to draw a La Liga team in the next round of the Cup, not to mention the fact that a number of defensive options who are currently injured may have made their return by January. Surely there will still be an opportunity for him sometime in the season to come into the team and make his mark, especially if he continues impressing for the Barcelona B team.

With Barcelona still very much involved in the Champions League, fighting for supremacy at the top of the Preimera Liga and still in the semis of the Copa del Rey, there will be plenty of opportunities for Wague to be involved in the New Year. As a youngster (under 21) he is automatically eligible for Barcelona’s Champions League squad – click here for the latest fixture and ticket information – which means there is a small possibility that he’ll make him debut in their crunch match against Lyon.
